Chalk & Behrendt - Lawyers & Consultants

A national practice and a national reputation

Chalk & Behrendt, previously Chalk & Fitzgerald, is a respected specialist practice based in Sydney. We focus on serving Indigenous organisations and businesses, governments, and other private clients in the areas of public law and land related issues.

We act for clients across Australia, including proceedings in the various state supreme courts, the Federal Court and High Court of Australia.

Results and integrity

Our reputation is built on the results we achieve for our clients. We measure our skill and commitment by their success. In every matter we keep their long-term interests squarely in view. Our advice is frank and strategic.

We respect other parties as well as the sometimes differing views within our clients. And we always endeavour to act with integrity.

At the forefront

At the forefront

Much of the law of native title and Aboriginal land rights is evolving. We strive to remain at the forefront of law and policy developments affecting our clients.

We have been involved in many landmark cases concerning the rights of Indigenous people and in advocating their interests in the development of key legislation, including the Native Title Act 1993 and the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW).

Indigenous organisations face significant challenges. By developing close relationships with our clients, often over many years, we are able to clearly recognise their needs and give advice that helps them achieve their wider goals.

Negotiated outcomes generally achieve the best results and a key to our successes has been developing and maintaining trusted relationships not only with our clients, but also with experts in related disciplines, industry and with government.

Accessible services

We understand that our clients' resources are usually limited and always precious. Our approach is to price our services in a way that keeps us accessible and effective. We offer excellent value for money, especially when measured against the outcomes we achieve.

Estimating costs in large and complex matters can be difficult. However having years of experience in acting for Indigenous people in remote, regional and urban locations on a broad range of issues, enables us to anticipate the problems that may arise and to develop approaches to efficiently deal with them.

Wherever possible, we try to use our clients' staff and their other in-house resources in the conduct of matters to transfer skills and defray costs.
